Who should take it, what you'll learn, what you'll need to bring, what bikes you'll be training on, etc. Also includes information on riding your own motorcycle during the BRC.
Who should take this course?
Anyone that:
- Has never operated a motorcycle before
- Has operated a motorcycle before, but not recently.
- Has operated a dirtbike before, and would like to but has never ridden on the street.
- Is riding a motorcycle, but has never had any formal instruction.
- Is riding a motorcycle, but does not have a Motorcycle Endorsement on their license (especially if you’ve recently received a ticket)
The Motorcycle Safety Foundation’s Basic RiderCourse is designed to provide an introduction to the fundamentals of safe, responsible motorcycling. It consists of classroom education (approximately 5 hours) as well as on-motorcycle instruction and practice (approximately 10 hours) with a variety of learning activities.
The BRC begins by focusing on basic motorcycle operation with an emphasis on clutch and throttle control. Students will learn how to move in a straight line, shift, stop and the basics of cornering. Students then move on to more advanced techniques such as Stopping Quickly, Swerving, Advanced Cornering, and Stopping Quickly in a Curve.
The BRC also focuses on street strategies with an emphasis on the SEE strategy to help you avoid potential hazards.
Students must pass a written examination as well as a on-cycle evaluation in order to receive a Completion Certificate.
Successful completion of the BRC can allow a participant to:
- Bypass the DPS driving evaluation for a motorcycle license
- Understand the Texas Helmet Law
- Be eligible for an insurance discount (dependent upon the Insurance Carrier)
- Have a traffic ticket dismissed (dependent upon the Court’s approval)
Students MUST meet the following criteria to take the BRC:
- Be at least 15 years of age or older at the start of class.
15-17 year olds Must have a valid Learner's Permit or above and parental consent.
- Be able to attend the entire course.
- Provide basic protective gear for the range.
Sturdy over the ankle boots or shoes, long sleeves, Jeans or other durable fabric pants, eyewear etc. More information on gear. (We provide motorcycles and helmets!)
In addition, it helps if you are:
- Able to ride a bicycle. If it has been a long time, we encourage you to brush up on your skills.
- Able to drive a standard transmission car. This is not a necessity, but having knowledge of how a clutch works will make it easier for some students.
